November is American Indian Heritage Month, a time set aside to encourage people to reflect on the Native tribes and cultures that first inhabited North America. Just in time for the holiday, there is a new young adult novel out written by a Native American author that centers on a lesser known character in the Peter Pan story, the daughter of the Indigenous Chief of the Picaninny Tribe, and keeper of the land in which Neverland was located.

When The Tale of Tiger Lily by Jill Featherstone gets underway, the beautiful young woman is running through the forest in tears, mourning the loss of the man she was supposed to marry. Walking Bear has just been killed. It was not by her hand, but she still feels responsible, and very forlorn.

It seems everyone important in her life has left her—first her mother and infant brother, then her husband-to-be. Just when it seems all is lost, someone new enters her life, but his is a forbidden love. Tiger Lily doesn’t have much time to wallow, however. When Captain Hook comes to Neverland hunting Peter Pan and takes Tiger Lily as his prisoner, things will never be the same for her.
