On River Time(Irwin, Idaho) - When a child goes through a traumatic experience involving abuse or neglect, the road to recovery is often a long one. There are a lot of emotions the victim will go through.

“Overcoming a feeling of guilt is one aspect of it. Coming to realize that what happened  is not your fault is another. When a person is young I think they carry that guilt and shame and can’t really talk about it,” said Steven Davis of Birmingham, Ala.

Davis knows first hand what it’s like to deal with such emotions. He was abused as a child. He is now 57-years-old and a successful businessman who serves as senior vice president of an insurance brokerage firm in Birmingham, Ala.

Over the years, one of his favorite places to bring clients has been The Lodge at Palisades Creek in Irwin, Idaho. After longtime manager Stan Klassen passed away in 2011, Davis decided to do something in his memory.

In May 2012, he published a picture book titled, On River Time, which includes photos and writings about river experiences at the Lodge. That summer, Davis also started up On River Time, a 501(c)(3) non-profit which serves abused and neglected children by offering mentoring and relationship building experiences through the venues of fly-fishing and the beauty of nature.

“The purpose of On River Time is to give these kids an experience they may not otherwise have in their life, and to give them a sense that they are not alone and that somebody cares,” said Davis.

Summer 2013 will be the second year in a row Davis has raised nearly $20,000 to provide a group of young people and their guardians with a memorable and transforming fly fishing trip. Two girls and two boys from the Big Oak Ranch, a children’s home in northeast Alabama that was started up by Alabama star defensive end John Croyle, have been invited to attend this year’s trip, which will take place between June 28 and July 2. Here is the planned schedule.

DAY 1 (June 28) Arrive at the Lodge around 3 p.m., pick out cabin, dinner.

DAY 2 - 4 (June 29, June 30, July 1)  Breakfast, meet guides at fly shop, decide which section of the river to fish, fly fish until 5pm, dinner then activities at the Liar’s Den.

DAY 5 – (July 2) Return home.
