Karen Kelly, author of the new novel, Prospice, signed books at The Bookcase of Wayzata in Wayzata, Minn., on Sat., Oct. 26th.
Prospice is a profoundly stirring story of young people on the brink of adulthood and the stark realities of family life--including harrowing grief and the consequences of long-buried secrets--Prospice is rich with psychological detail and unforgettably delineated characters. In elegant prose and pitch-perfect period detail, Karen Kelly draws us deep inside the lives of her characters, offering poignant humor along with page-turning suspense that will captivate readers to the very last, revealing page.
A publisher's Weekly Review that just came out says, "…Kelly's novel is well paced and features deftly drawn characters and a superb sense of setting that will immerse readers in Salem of the 1950s."
October is The Month of Mystery and the perfect time of year for a writing workshop led by award-winning Twin Cities mystery authors Marilyn Jax and Craig MacIntosh.
They teamed up to share some of the tricks of their trade with eager learners who came to the free workshop at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Apple Valley, Minn., on Sat. Oct. 26th. Most of the participants said they learned about the workshop in a newspaper article that ran in the Apple Valley edition of This Week Newspapers.
Marilyn talked about her books, The Find, Road to Omalos and Sapphire Trails, and shared how her work and travel experiences played into the plots. Craig focused on the intense research he did for both of his books, The Fortunate Orphans and The Last Lightning.
The authors also talked workshop participants through a series of writing exercises designed to get them thinking about how a mystery comes together. Both authors' books are available for purchase at Barnes & Noble Apple Valley, and can also be purchased via their websites, www.marilynjax.com, www.thefortunateorphans.com and www.thelastlightning.com.
On Oct. 11th, Minnesota author Marilyn Jax’s latest novel, “Sapphire Trails,” was named first place winner in the Genre Fiction category of the 21st Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards contest.
“I was just so excited when I received the call. This award is a big deal,” said Jax.
The Writer’s Digest award marks the 6th time the novel has been recognized by a book award program since its release in late 2012. The book has also won the mystery category of the 2013 National Indie Excellence Awards, the Fiction: Mystery/Suspense category of the 2013 International Book Awards and the mystery categories of the USA Best Book Awards and the Beverly Hills Book Awards. “Sapphire Trails” was named a finalist in the Midwest Book Awards.
